How to Break-In a New Baseball Glove With Shaving Cream

A new baseball glove is an exciting purchase. The smell of fresh leather, the stiff yet soft feel of the glove, and the anticipation of catching fly balls and turning double plays fill any baseball player with joy.

However, that feeling can quickly change to frustration when the ball hits the leather and pops out or when the ball doesn’t even make it into the webbing. Why does this happen?

The answer is simple: the glove isn’t broken-in yet.  While it may be tempting to just start using the glove, it won’t perform as well as a broken-in glove. In order to catch those line drives and help your team win, you need to break-in your new baseball glove using shaving cream.

Why You Need to Break-In Your New Baseball Glove

A new baseball glove is stiff because it hasn’t been molded to fit your hand yet. In order for the baseball glove to be game-ready, you need to break-in the leather so it’s more pliable.

If you don’t break-in your new baseball glove, you risk having the ball pop out or not even make it into the webbing.  Nobody wants that! So how do you break-in a baseball glove using shaving cream? It’s easy! All you need is a can of shaving cream and about 30 minutes.

How to Break-In Your New Baseball Glove Using Shaving Cream

  1. Start by spraying your entire baseball glove with shaving cream. Make sure to get into all of the nooks and crannies, including between the fingers, in the palm, and in the webbing.
  2. Once your baseball gloves is thoroughly coated in shaving cream, put on a batting glove or gardening glove overtop so you don’t get shaving cream all over your hand.
  3. Gently massage the shaving cream into the leather for about 5 minutes. This will help soften up the leather.
  4. Wipe off any excess shaving cream with a clean cloth and let your baseball gloves sit for about 20 minutes so the leather can absorb some of the moisture from the shaving cream.
  5. Repeat steps 1 through 4 until your baseball gloves feels soft and supple.
  6. Remove any remaining residue with a clean cloth before storing your baseball gloves away until game time.

Breaking-in your new baseball gloves might seem like a time consuming task but it’s worth it when you make that first great catch or turn that crucial double play.

Follow these simple steps using only a can of shaving cream and you’ll have game-ready gloves in no time!
